Following the Get Your Green On program area elementary students, teacher/staff members and parents were able to incorporate the 3R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and water, energy and resource conservation knowledge into their daily lives.
Schools participated in paper and plastic recycling, environmental presentations and educational videos. Additionally, each classroom received environmental books, had the opportunity to see magician Timothy Wenk and visited with "Enviroman." Classrooms also ventured to the Tallgrass Prairie near UNI and learned about prairies and Iowa soil.
Four schools participated in a battery recycling competition and as a result, 12,876 pounds of rechargeable batteries were recycled. The effect the program had on students, teachers and parents is incalculable and Get Your Green On was deemed a success.
